چکیده

Toeplitz matrices occur in many mathematical as well as scientific and engineering investigations. This paper considers the spectra of banded Toeplitz and quasi-Toeplitz matrices with emphasis on non-normal matrices of arbitrarily large order and relatively small bandwidth. These are the type of matrices that appear in the investigation of stability and convergence of difference approximations to partial differential equations. Quasi-Toeplitz matrices are the result of non-Dirichlet boundary conditions for the difference approximations. The eigenvalue problem for a banded Toeplitz or quasi-Toeplitz matrix of large order is, in general, analytically intractable and (for non-normal matrices) numerically unreliable. An asymptotic (matrix order approaches infinity) approach partitions the eigenvalue analysis of a quasi-Toeplitz matrix into two parts, namely the analysis for the boundary condition independent spectrum and the analysis for the boundary condition dependent spectrum. The boundary condition independent spectrum is the same as the pure Toeplitz matrix spectrum. Algorithms for computing both parts of the spectrum are presented. Examples are used to demonstrate the utility of the algorithms, to present some interesting spectra, and to point out some of the numerical difficulties encountered when conventional matrix eigenvalue routines are employed for non-normal matrices of large order. The analysis for the Toeplitz spectrum also leads to a diagonal similarity transformation that improves conventional numerical eigenvalue computations. Finally, the algorithm for the asymptotic spectrum is extended to the Toeplitz generalized eigenvalue problem which occurs, for example, in the stability analysis of Pad_ type difference approximations to differential equations.

Non-Self-Adjoint Toeplitz Matrices Whose Principal Submatrices Have Real Spectrum

We introduce and investigate a class of complex semi-infinite banded Toeplitz matrices satisfying the condition that the spectra of their principal submatrices accumulate onto a real interval when the size of the submatrix grows to ∞. We prove that a banded Toeplitz matrix belongs to this class if and only if its symbol has real values on a Jordan curve located in C\{0}. Surprisingly, it turns ...

On the Characterization of a Class of Difference Equations

We focus on the behavior of solutions of the difference equation xn b1xn−1 b2xn−2 · · · bnx0 yn, n 1, 2, . . ., where bk is a fixed sequence of complex numbers, and yk is a fixed sequence in a complex Banach space. We give the general solution of this difference equation. To examine the asymptotic behavior of solutions, we compute the spectra of operators which correspond to such type of differ...

Asymptotic properties of the QR factorization of banded Hessenberg-Toeplitz matrices

We consider the Givens QR factorization of banded Hessenberg-Toeplitz matrices of large order and relatively small bandwidth. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the R factor and the Givens rotation when the order of the matrix goes to infinity, and present some interesting convergence properties. These properties can lead to savings in the computation of the exact QR factorization and gi...

Inside the eigenvalues of certain Hermitian Toeplitz band matrices

While extreme eigenvalues of large Hermitian Toeplitz matrices have been studied in detail for a long time, much less is known about individual inner eigenvalues. This paper explores the behavior of the jth eigenvalue of an n-by-n banded Hermitian Toeplitz matrix as n goes to infinity and provides asymptotic formulas that are uniform in j for 1 ≤ j ≤ n. The real-valued generating function of th...

An Equilibrium Problem for the Limiting Eigenvalue Distribution of Rational Toeplitz Matrices

We consider the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of Toeplitz matrices with rational symbol as the size of the matrix goes to infinity. Our main result is that the weak limit of the normalized eigenvalue counting measure is a particular component of the unique solution to a vector equilibrium problem. Moreover, we show that the other components describe the limiting behavior of certain gen...
